The four roles in every account
Every meaningful account decision involves some mix of these four roles. Miss one and you're at risk of a surprise late in the deal or renewal.
| Role | What they care about | How to spot them | How to engage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economic Buyer | Budget, business outcomes, risk to their own credibility for approving the spend | Controls or approves the budget line; often not in day-to-day calls | Speak in business outcomes (revenue, cost, risk) — never product features. Earn direct access even if a champion tries to filter you out. |
| Champion | Looking good internally for backing this; wants proof it was the right call | Advocates for you internally, responds fastest, shares internal context | Arm them with data and language to sell internally on your behalf — they're doing your selling when you're not in the room. |
| Blocker / Skeptic | Risk, disruption to their process, being blamed if this goes wrong | Slow to respond, asks pointed/critical questions, was possibly burned by the last vendor | Don't avoid them — meet directly, acknowledge the risk they're worried about, and give them a specific, narrow way to be right about caution. |
| User / Influencer | Whether this makes their actual day-to-day easier or harder | Uses the product daily, has ground-truth on adoption pain | Listen to them for real adoption signal — their sentiment often predicts renewal risk before anyone with budget authority notices. |
Your account map (fill this in per account)
For each account, name a real person in each role. If a role is blank, that's your biggest open risk.
Account: ___________________
| Role | Name | Title | Influence (1–5) | Sentiment (😊/😐/😟) | What they care about | Next engagement action |

Red flags to check for right now
- Do you have a name in every role, or are any blank?
- Is your Economic Buyer someone you've spoken to directly, or only heard about secondhand?
- Could your Champion leave tomorrow and take the relationship with them (single-threaded risk)?
- Have you ever had a direct conversation with your Blocker/Skeptic, or only heard their objections filtered through someone else?
- Has a User/Influencer told you something about adoption that contradicts what your Champion is telling you?
The one rule
If you can only name one stakeholder in an account, you don't have a relationship — you have a single point of failure.
How to use it
Fill in the account map for every strategic account this quarter; any blank role is your next outreach priority, and any single-name account is a multi-threading risk to fix before the next renewal.
