Self-Coaching Call Debrief Checklist
The self-review questions to run against your own call recording on the weeks nobody else has time to listen — organized by call phase, ending in one specific change for next time.
What's inside
- A pre-listen setup step (two passes, notes on the second)
- Checklist questions organized by call phase: opening, discovery, value, objections, next steps
- A talk-ratio self-estimate prompt
- A cross-call pattern-check section (not just single-call review)
- A close-out step that forces naming one specific change for the next call
For the weeks your manager doesn't have time to review your calls, this is the checklist you run on yourself. Listen back to the recording (or replay it from memory within 24 hours if no recording exists) and go question by question — don't skip to the end.
Before you start
- Listen to the whole call once without taking notes, just to hear your own tone.
- Listen a second time with this checklist open, pausing at each relevant moment.
Opening & Purpose
- Did I state a clear, specific purpose for the call in the first 60 seconds — or did I let the buyer/agenda drift define it?
- Did I confirm how much time we had and what "a good outcome" would look like for both sides?
Discovery & Listening
- Did I ask at least 3 open questions before I said anything about my product/solution?
- Did I ask a follow-up "why" or "what happens if" question on at least one answer, instead of moving straight to the next question on my list?
- Can I repeat back, in the buyer's own words, their single biggest problem — without checking my notes?
- What's my rough talk ratio? Closer to 50/50, or was I over 60%?
Value & Positioning
- When I talked about my product, did I connect it to something specific the buyer said — or recite a generic pitch?
- Did I quantify impact (time, money, risk) in the buyer's own terms, or only in mine?
Objections & Pushback
- Did I let the objection finish before responding, or did I jump in?
- Did I ask a clarifying question about the objection before answering it?
- Did I address the objection directly, or did I deflect/minimize it?
Next Steps
- Did the call end with a specific, mutually agreed next step (date, attendee, artifact) — or a vague "I'll follow up"?
- Did I confirm the next step out loud before hanging up, not just in a follow-up email?
Pattern Check (across your last 3–5 calls, not just this one)
- Is there a moment type that shows up as a weak spot across multiple calls (e.g., always rushing discovery, always going quiet on pricing objections)?
- If yes — name the ONE skill behind that pattern (not "I need to be better," a named skill).
Turn it into action
- Write down the ONE thing you'll do differently on your next call — one sentence, specific and observable.
- If you have a manager 1:1 coming up, bring this debrief with you rather than waiting to be asked.
How to use it
Run this after listening back to your own call (ideally within 24 hours), check off each item honestly against what actually happened rather than what you intended, and end by naming one specific change for your next call.
