Sales Comp Benchmark Data Sources Directory

An annotated directory of where to pull real, defensible OTE and pay-mix benchmark data by role, industry, and region — from live SaaS platforms to consulting-grade surveys.

What's inside

  • 12 annotated sources grouped into 5 tiers: real-time platforms, consulting-grade surveys, vendor-native reports, SaaS-specific free reports, and general/self-reported data
  • Pave and OpenComp entries with data-sharing and coverage caveats
  • Radford (Aon) and Mercer/Alexander Group entries for board-grade statistical confidence
  • Xactly Insights and Spiff/Salesforce report entries with sample-bias notes
  • The Bridge Group SaaS AE/SDR report and OpenView SaaS Benchmarks entries
  • Glassdoor/Levels.fyi/LinkedIn Salary and Payscale/Salary.com entries with explicit 'directional only, never primary' warnings
  • Gartner and KeyBanc/SaaS Capital entries for design-philosophy and board-context use cases
  • A closing triangulation rule for how to combine sources on a real comp redesign

An annotated map of where to actually pull defensible OTE, pay-mix, and quota-attainment benchmark data — organized from real-time SaaS-native tools to consulting-grade surveys.

Real-time / self-serve compensation platforms

1. Pave (pave.com)

  • Best for: Live OTE and pay-mix benchmarking for tech/SaaS roles, cut by function/level/region/company stage.
  • Cost: Paid; typically requires contributing your own comp data to unlock full cuts.
  • Cadence: Continuously updated.
  • Caveat: Tech/VC-backed company bias — thinner data outside SaaS and outside major tech hubs.

2. OpenComp

  • Best for: Building comp bands + market benchmarking together, similar data-sharing model to Pave.
  • Cost: Free tier for basic benchmarking; paid for full planning suite.
  • Cadence: Continuously updated.
  • Caveat: Newer/smaller dataset than Pave in some verticals — cross-check on high-stakes decisions.

Consulting-grade survey data

3. Radford (Aon) Sales Compensation Survey

  • Best for: Statistically robust benchmarks by role, level, industry, and region — the reference point most boards expect.
  • Cost: Expensive; typically enterprise-only, participation-based access.
  • Cadence: Annual, with periodic pulse updates.
  • Caveat: Overkill and slow for a fast-growing 20-person sales org; built for scaled enterprises.

4. Mercer / Alexander Group Sales Comp Surveys

  • Best for: Custom cuts and comp design guidance alongside the numbers — use when you need statistical confidence for a board-level comp change.
  • Cost: Consulting-engagement pricing.
  • Cadence: Annual survey + on-demand consulting.
  • Caveat: You're paying for judgment as much as data — don't use it just to look up a number.

Vendor-native benchmark reports

5. Xactly Insights

  • Best for: Benchmark data drawn from Xactly's own ICM customer base — useful if you already run comp through Xactly.
  • Cost: Included with certain Xactly tiers.
  • Cadence: Periodic reports.
  • Caveat: Self-selected sample skews mid-market/enterprise.

6. Spiff / Salesforce "State of Sales Compensation" Report

  • Best for: Directional, free, published annually — good sanity-check reading, not a statistical source.
  • Cost: Free.
  • Cadence: Annual.
  • Caveat: Aggregate/marketing-flavored — don't cite it in a board deck as your primary source.

SaaS-specific free/low-cost reports

7. The Bridge Group SaaS AE/SDR Metrics & Compensation Report

  • Best for: The single best starting point for SMB/mid-market SaaS AE, SDR, and CS comp and ramp-time benchmarks together.
  • Cost: Low-cost or free depending on year.
  • Cadence: Annual.
  • Caveat: SaaS-only; doesn't generalize to complex/enterprise hardware or services sales.

8. OpenView SaaS Benchmarks Report

  • Best for: Broader SaaS operating benchmarks with a sales-comp section — good for triangulating S&M efficiency alongside comp.
  • Cost: Free.
  • Cadence: Annual.
  • Caveat: Comp section is a slice of a bigger report — thinner role-level detail.

General/self-reported (directional only — never primary)

9. Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, LinkedIn Salary

  • Best for: A fast sanity check on whether your OTE is wildly out of market.
  • Cost: Free.
  • Cadence: Continuous, user-submitted.
  • Caveat: Self-reported, often base-only or ambiguous about OTE vs. base — never cite as your primary comp-design source.

10. Payscale / Salary.com / ZipRecruiter

  • Best for: Base-pay sanity checks in non-tech verticals (industrial, healthcare, financial services sales).
  • Cost: Free tiers + paid enterprise access.
  • Cadence: Continuous.
  • Caveat: Weak on OTE/pay-mix specificity — built for general HR base-pay benchmarking, not sales comp design.

Research/analyst context

11. Gartner for Sales Leaders

  • Best for: Comp philosophy and design frameworks alongside benchmark ranges — useful when the question is "what should our pay-mix philosophy be," not just "what's the number."
  • Cost: Subscription (expensive).
  • Cadence: Continuous research cadence.
  • Caveat: Comp is one thread among many in a broad research subscription, not a dedicated comp-survey product.

12. KeyBanc Capital Markets / SaaS Capital Private SaaS Company Survey

  • Best for: Investor-grade context — S&M efficiency, CAC payback, and comp-adjacent metrics for board conversations about spend, not individual role benchmarking.
  • Cost: Free (published survey).
  • Cadence: Annual.
  • Caveat: Not a role-level comp source — use to frame the business case, pair with a role-level source above for the actual numbers.

How to use this directory

For a board-level comp redesign, triangulate at least one consulting-grade survey (Radford/Mercer/Alexander Group) with one real-time platform (Pave/OpenComp) and one free SaaS-specific report (Bridge Group). Never rely on a single source, and never cite self-reported data (Glassdoor/Levels.fyi) as your primary evidence.

How to use it

Match your situation (board redesign vs. quick sanity check vs. SaaS benchmarking) to the relevant tier above, and pull from at least two tiers before presenting any comp number as market-backed.
