The timing principle
A referral ask succeeds or fails based on timing more than wording. Ask during a peak-satisfaction moment — not "whenever you get a chance." The five reliable moments:
- Immediately after a deal closes (the high of saying yes)
- Right after a new user's first "aha" moment in onboarding
- Right after a strong QBR or renewal signature
- The moment a champion tells you unprompted that something is working
- When a champion is promoted, moves teams, or leaves for a new company
Use the script matched to the moment below. Swap in your own product/outcome language once, then reuse verbatim.
Script 1 — Post-win / just signed
"Congratulations again on getting this approved — glad we could make it work. One thing that helps me do my job well: the best new relationships I build almost always come from someone like you making an intro. Is there one other [title] — at this company or one you used to work with — who's dealing with the same problem you were six months ago? I'd love a warm intro, and I'll make sure it's a good experience for them, no pressure."
Script 2 — Post-onboarding "first win" moment
"You just hit [specific first win/milestone] — that's exactly the kind of result I love seeing this early. Quick ask: who's the first person that comes to mind who'd get real value from seeing this? A short intro email is all I need — I'll take it from there."
Script 3 — Post-QBR / renewal signed
"Thanks for the confidence in renewing — that means a lot. Since we're already talking about the results from this past year, is there anyone in your network — another [title], a former colleague, someone in a sister team — who should hear about what you've done here? I'd rather learn from a warm intro than cold outreach any day."
Script 4 — Champion moving to a new role or company
"Congratulations on the new role — really well deserved. I know priorities shift when someone lands somewhere new, so no pressure on using us again there. But two things: first, if you ever want to bring this with you, I'm here. Second, is there someone taking over your old responsibilities here who I should introduce myself to, so the relationship doesn't go cold?"
Script 5 — Unsolicited praise moment
Use this the moment a champion says something positive without being asked (in a call, email, or Slack):
"That's great to hear — genuinely makes my week. Can I ask a favor while it's fresh: is there someone else who'd benefit from hearing this directly from you, rather than from me? A two-line intro is plenty."
Script 6 — Case-study / testimonial participant
"Thank you again for doing the case study with us — it's going to help a lot of people considering this decision see it in a real voice, not just ours. Since you've already put your name behind the result: is there anyone in your network who's wrestling with [the same problem] right now who'd want to talk to you directly, peer to peer, before they ever talk to me?"
Script 7 — LinkedIn message version
"Hey [Name] — following up on how well [outcome] has gone since we started working together. I'm trying to find one or two more [title]s dealing with [problem] before I take on new accounts this quarter. Is there anyone in your network worth a warm intro? Happy to make it easy — just forward this or let me draft the intro note for you."
Follow-up nudge (referral has gone quiet)
"Hi [Name] — no rush at all, just circling back on the intro to [contact/role] we talked about. If it's not the right time, totally fine to say so — otherwise happy to draft a two-line email you can forward whenever's convenient."
Thank-you / close-the-loop script (after the referral converts)
"Wanted you to be the first to know — [referred company] signed on [date], and your intro is a big part of why that happened smoothly. Thank you, genuinely. If there's ever anything I can do on my side — an intro, a reference, anything — I owe you one."
Rules that make every script above work
- Never ask "do you know anyone who might be interested" — it's too vague to act on. Ask for a name or a specific type of person.
- Offer to draft the intro email yourself — it removes most of the friction for the referrer.
- Always close the loop when the referral converts (or doesn't) — referrers who never hear back stop referring.
How to use it
Match the moment you're in right now to the corresponding script, fill in the brackets, and send or say it within the same conversation or same day — waiting dilutes the peak-satisfaction window.
