Prospecting Skill Self-Assessment Quiz

A 12-question diagnostic across cold calling, cold email, and social outreach that scores each channel out of 20 and points to the single specific gap worth closing first.

What's inside

  • 4 cold-calling diagnostic questions
  • 4 cold-email diagnostic questions
  • 4 social/LinkedIn outreach diagnostic questions
  • 1-5 scoring scale per question with a 20-point ceiling per category
  • Score-to-interpretation table (strength / developing / gap)
  • Method for isolating your single lowest-scoring behavior, not just the weak channel
  • Resource mapping from gap to fix
  • Retake cadence recommendation

Answer each question honestly on a 1–5 scale (1 = rarely/never true, 5 = consistently true). This is a diagnostic, not a test — the goal is to find your single biggest gap, not to score well.

Cold Calling (Questions 1–4)

  1. I can deliver my opening statement in under 15 seconds without sounding like I'm reading a script. (1–5)
  2. When a prospect raises an objection in the first 60 seconds, I acknowledge it before responding rather than arguing or over-explaining. (1–5)
  3. I ask at least 3 open-ended discovery questions before mentioning any product feature. (1–5)
  4. I can navigate a gatekeeper stall line ("send an email," "what's this regarding") without losing the call. (1–5)

Cold Email (Questions 5–8)

  1. My subject lines are specific to the recipient (role, trigger, or company detail) rather than generic ("Quick question," "Following up"). (1–5)
  2. My opening line references something true and specific about the recipient's business, not a generic industry statement. (1–5)
  3. Every email I send has exactly one clear, low-friction call to action (not "let me know if you're interested"). (1–5)
  4. I track open, reply, and positive-reply rates per campaign and adjust subject lines or messaging based on the data. (1–5)

Social/LinkedIn Outreach (Questions 9–12)

  1. I engage with a prospect's content (comment, thoughtful reaction) before ever sending a connection request or message. (1–5)
  2. My connection requests include a one-line, non-salesy reason for connecting rather than going in blank or with a pitch. (1–5)
  3. I use trigger events (job change, company news, posted content) to time my outreach rather than messaging cold with no context. (1–5)
  4. I have a defined cadence for following up on unanswered social messages (not zero follow-up, not daily pestering). (1–5)

Scoring

  • Cold Call score = sum of Q1–Q4 (out of 20)
  • Cold Email score = sum of Q5–Q8 (out of 20)
  • Social Outreach score = sum of Q9–Q12 (out of 20)

What your scores mean

Category scoreInterpretation
16–20Strength — this channel is a reliable pipeline source; consider mentoring others here
11–15Developing — functional but inconsistent; targeted practice will move this fast
4–10Gap — this is likely costing you the most pipeline; prioritize this channel first

Finding your priority gap

  1. Circle your lowest category score.
  2. Within that category, circle your lowest single question score — that's the specific behavior to drill first, not the whole channel.
  3. Match it to a resource:
  4. Weak cold-call opener or gatekeeper handling → use the Gatekeeper Navigation Cheat Sheet and drill the opener daily for one week.
  5. Weak email specificity or CTA → rewrite your last 5 sent emails against the Cold Email Response-Rate Calculator benchmarks.
  6. Weak trigger-timing on any channel → work through the Trigger-Event Prospecting Guide and apply it to 5 target accounts this week.

Retake cadence

Retake this quiz every 6–8 weeks. A gap that hasn't moved after two cycles of focused practice is a signal to ask a manager for live call-shadowing or a peer-coaching pairing, not just more solo repetition.

How to use it

Score all 12 questions in one sitting, tally the three category totals, and spend the next two weeks drilling only your single lowest-scoring question before retaking the quiz.
