Objection Handling Certification Rubric (Bronze / Silver / Gold)
An S-SEA-style, competency-tiered mastery rubric with observable behavioral anchors across seven dimensions, used to certify reps into Bronze, Silver, or Gold objection-handling tiers.
What's inside
- 7 scored competency dimensions
- Bronze tier behavioral anchors across all 7 dimensions
- Silver tier behavioral anchors across all 7 dimensions
- Gold tier behavioral anchors across all 7 dimensions (including coaching capability)
- 1–5 scoring scale with generic anchors
- Assessment method and required evidence per tier
- Certification thresholds (minimum averages plus floor rules)
- Recertification cadence
- Printable scorecard grid
Seven scored dimensions, three tiers. A rep's tier is determined by the LOWEST dimension score that clears the floor for that tier — one weak dimension caps the whole certification.
The 7 Competency Dimensions
- Acknowledgment & Rapport
- Diagnostic Questioning (isolating the real objection)
- Reframe & Value Articulation
- Proof & Evidence Use
- Close / Commitment
- Objection Prevention
- Recovery (when an objection resurfaces)
Scoring Scale (applied to every dimension)
| Score | Anchor |
|---|---|
| 1 | Not demonstrated |
| 2 | Emerging / inconsistent |
| 3 | Meets bar reliably |
| 4 | Strong / adapts to context |
| 5 | Expert / teaches others |
Bronze — Foundational (safe for unsupervised live calls)
| Dimension | Behavioral anchor |
|---|---|
| Acknowledgment | Consistently acknowledges without arguing or getting defensive; may sound scripted |
| Diagnostic Questioning | Asks at least one clarifying question before responding; doesn't always isolate the true root objection |
| Reframe | Uses a memorized reframe correctly matched to the objection family |
| Proof | References at least one proof point from memory when prompted |
| Close | Attempts a trial close after responding, though timing may be off |
| Prevention | Not yet demonstrated — reactive only |
| Recovery | Repeats the same rebuttal if the objection resurfaces |
Assessment: 5 recorded/live calls reviewed + certification roleplay (5 unscripted objections). Threshold: average ≥3.0, no dimension below 2.
Silver — Proficient (fluent across all 6 objection families, adapts in real time)
| Dimension | Behavioral anchor |
|---|---|
| Acknowledgment | Feels natural and conversational, varies phrasing to context |
| Diagnostic Questioning | Consistently distinguishes the stated objection from the real one before responding |
| Reframe | Adapts the reframe to the specific prospect rather than reciting a script |
| Proof | Selects the MOST relevant proof point unprompted |
| Close | Trial-closes at the right moment and correctly reads whether it's resolved |
| Prevention | Proactively defuses at least one likely objection before it's raised (voicemail/email/early call) |
| Recovery | Adapts approach with a new angle or proof when the objection resurfaces |
Assessment: 8 recorded calls (rep-selected worst-case examples) + peer panel review + certification roleplay (8 objections, 2 atypical "curveballs"). Threshold: average ≥4.0, no dimension below 3, at least 1 documented real-call prevention instance.
Gold — Expert (sets the standard, coaches others, handles enterprise/high-stakes deals)
| Dimension | Behavioral anchor |
|---|---|
| Acknowledgment | Handles hostile/adversarial objections (legal, procurement) without losing rapport or control |
| Diagnostic Questioning | Uncovers objections the prospect never verbalized ("silent objections") through pattern recognition |
| Reframe | Builds bespoke reframes on the fly for objections outside the standard 6 families |
| Proof | Creates new proof assets from own deals for team-wide reuse |
| Close | Converts unresolved objections into a committed next step even in multi-stakeholder deals |
| Prevention | Builds prevention material used by others; measurably lowers objection frequency in own pipeline |
| Recovery | Revives previously "lost" deals at a rate above team average (see Deal Autopsy Checklist) |
| Coaching (Gold only) | Can grade a Bronze/Silver roleplay with ≥90% inter-rater agreement with a certified assessor |
Assessment: full deal review (3 closed-won + 3 closed-lost with objections annotated) + live shadow of 2 real high-stakes calls + calibration session with 2 existing Gold assessors. Threshold: average ≥4.5, no dimension below 4, passes calibration check.
Recertification Cadence
- Bronze → reassessed at 90 days
- Silver → reassessed at 6 months
- Gold → annual, plus spot recalibration

How to use it
Score live or recorded calls against each of the 7 dimensions using the scorecard grid, apply the tier thresholds to determine Bronze/Silver/Gold eligibility, and schedule recertification on the stated cadence rather than certifying once and forgetting.
