LinkedIn Cold Outreach Message Swipe File
Connection-request and follow-up message copy for LinkedIn outreach, organized by scenario, that earns replies without tripping spam filters or reading like automation.
What's inside
- Cold connection request with no prior context
- Mutual-connection request
- Content-engagement connection request
- Trigger-event connection request (new role, funding, expansion)
- First value-add message after connection accepted
- Soft ask for a 15-minute call after 1-2 value touches
- Break-up message after 2-3 unanswered messages
- Reply-rate rules: character limits, message spacing, personalization
Connection-request and follow-up copy that earns replies without reading like an automated sequence. LinkedIn connection notes are capped at 300 characters — every line below fits, and none of them ask for anything on the first message.
How to use this: Match the scenario to your situation, personalize the bracketed section with something real (not just their first name), and never send the same note to more than a handful of people without variation — LinkedIn's own spam detection and prospects' pattern-recognition both catch repetition fast.
Connection Requests (Under 300 Characters — No Ask)
Scenario: Cold, no context
Hi [Name] — came across your profile while researching [specific reason, e.g. "how sales teams at growth-stage SaaS companies handle rep ramp"]. Would like to connect and follow your posts on [topic].
Scenario: Mutual connection
Hi [Name] — noticed we're both connected to [Mutual Name]. I work with [role type] on [specific topic] and would like to add you to my network.
Scenario: Engaged with their content
Hi [Name] — really agreed with your take on [specific post topic]. Would like to connect and keep seeing your posts on [topic].
Scenario: Trigger event (new role, funding, expansion)
Congrats on [the new role / the raise / the expansion], [Name]. I work with [role type] at similar-stage companies and would like to connect.
Scenario: Post-webinar / event
Hi [Name] — great to (virtually) cross paths at [event name]. Would like to stay connected.
First Message After Connection Accepted (Value, No Ask)
Scenario: Standard first follow-up (send 1–2 days after accept)
Thanks for connecting, [Name]. No pitch here — I work with [role type] dealing with [specific pain], and thought this [article/stat/short resource] might be relevant given what I've seen at [Company/their industry]. No response needed either way.
Scenario: Content-share (genuinely useful, zero ask)
Saw this and thought of your role at [Company] — [one-line summary of the resource and why it's relevant]. [Link]. Happy to send more like it if it's useful.
Scenario: Direct question (low-effort to answer)
Curious, [Name] — when [specific pain] comes up for your team, is that something you or someone else usually ends up owning? Asking because it shapes how I'd even think about being useful here.
Soft Ask for a Conversation (Send After 1–2 Value Touches)
Scenario: Standard soft ask
Been enjoying the back-and-forth, [Name]. If it's ever useful, happy to do a quick 15-minute call on [specific topic] — zero obligation, and if it's not relevant right now, no worries at all.
Scenario: Tied to a specific insight they shared
What you said about [something they posted/mentioned] is exactly the kind of thing I help [role type] work through. Worth a quick call, or is this not a priority right now?
Break-Up Message (Final Touch — Send After 2–3 Unanswered Messages)
Hi [Name] — I've reached out a couple of times about [specific topic] without a response, which is completely understandable. I'll stop following up here, but if it's ever relevant, feel free to reach out — always happy to help even without anything in it for me.
Reply-Rate Rules
- Never send a pitch in the connection request itself — it's the single fastest way to get ignored or reported.
- Reference something specific and true about the person (a post, a mutual, a role change) in every message — generic personalization ("I see you work in sales!") reads as automated even when it isn't.
- Keep every message under 500 characters after connection, under 300 in the request itself.
- Space messages 2–4 days apart minimum — daily LinkedIn messages read as pressure, not persistence.
- If they view your profile or react to a post without replying, that's a signal to try a different channel (call, email) — not to send a second LinkedIn message immediately.
How to use it
Match the scenario to your situation, personalize the bracketed section with something specific and true about the prospect, and never send an ask in the connection request itself.
