Growth vs. Fixed Mindset Sales Quiz

Twelve real sales scenarios — quota misses, ghosting, blunt rejection, contract surprises — each scored on a 1-5 fixed-to-growth scale, mapping your actual instinctive reactions rather than abstract mindset theory.

What's inside

  • 12 real sales-scenario prompts covering quota misses, ghosting, feedback, contract surprises, and vertical changes
  • 1-5 anchored scale per scenario contrasting the fixed reaction against the growth reaction
  • Total scoring bands from strongly fixed to strong growth orientation
  • Guidance on reading the spread across scenarios, not just the total, to find your most fixable pattern

Instructions

For each real sales scenario, rate where your actual, first-instinct reaction falls on the 1-5 scale — not the reaction you know you're supposed to have. 1 is the fully fixed-mindset reaction, 5 is the fully growth-mindset reaction. Be honest; there's no score here that gets reported to anyone.

The 12 Scenarios

1. You lose a deal to "no decision" after three months of work. 1 = "That was a waste of three months, I should have known better than to invest in it." … 5 = "What in my qualification process let this run three months before I caught the real risk — I can fix that for the next one." Your score: ___

2. A prospect tells you your price is "way too high" in the first five minutes. 1 = "I'm bad at this, I should have led differently." … 5 = "Interesting — what's the anchor they're comparing to? That's useful data for how I open next time." Your score: ___

3. You bomb a demo because of a tech issue you couldn't control. 1 = "Demos always go wrong for me, I have bad luck." … 5 = "I need a backup plan for this specific failure mode — that's a fixable gap in my prep." Your score: ___

4. A colleague with less experience closes a deal you thought was unwinnable. 1 = "They just got lucky, or the deal was easy." … 5 = "What did they actually do differently — can I ask them to walk me through it?" Your score: ___

5. Your manager gives you pointed feedback on a call you thought went well. 1 = "They just don't get how that account works" (dismiss it) or "I clearly can't do this job" (collapse). … 5 = "That's a specific, useful data point — let me ask a follow-up question to understand it fully." Your score: ___

6. You've missed quota two quarters running. 1 = "I'm probably not cut out for this role." … 5 = "Two quarters is enough of a pattern to diagnose properly — let me find what's actually broken in my process." Your score: ___

7. A prospect ghosts you after a great final-stage call. 1 = "I must have said something wrong, I'll never know what, I'll just avoid finding out." … 5 = "I'll do a structured re-engagement attempt and also ask directly what changed — silence is data too." Your score: ___

8. You're assigned a new, unfamiliar vertical to sell into. 1 = "I don't know this space, I'm going to struggle here." … 5 = "I don't know this space yet — here's my plan to get up to speed in the first 30 days." Your score: ___

9. A newer rep asks you for coaching, and you realize you can't clearly explain why you're good at a certain skill. 1 = "I guess I'm just naturally good at it, hard to explain." … 5 = "That's worth breaking down properly — if I can't explain it, I probably can't repeat it reliably either." Your score: ___

10. You get a rejection email that's blunt or even a little rude. 1 = "That confirms people don't want what we sell / people are just difficult." … 5 = "That's one person's bad day or bad fit — doesn't tell me anything about the next call." Your score: ___

11. A deal you were sure about falls through at contract stage over a term you didn't anticipate. 1 = "Legal/contract stuff is just not my strength, never will be." … 5 = "That's a specific skill gap I can close — I'll get the term sheet reviewed earlier next time." Your score: ___

12. Your company changes the product or pricing mid-quarter, disrupting your pitch. 1 = "Now I have to relearn everything, this sets me back." … 5 = "New pitch to build — I'll get the first version out fast and refine it against real objections." Your score: ___

Scoring

Add your 12 scores. Range: 12-60.

TotalRead
50-60Strong growth orientation — setbacks are consistently treated as data, not verdicts
36-49Mixed/situational — growth mindset under normal pressure, fixed reactions creep in under compounding stress (missed quota, public feedback)
24-35Leaning fixed — setbacks are being read as identity statements more often than not; this is coachable, not fixed in the person
12-23Strongly fixed in this domain — worth a direct conversation with a manager or mentor; this pattern will cap performance regardless of skill level

Look at the spread, not just the total. A rep who scores low specifically on quota-related items (6, 9) but high elsewhere has a narrower, more specific and more fixable pattern than someone flat across all 12.

How to use it

Score your honest first-instinct reaction to each scenario, total the 12 scores against the bands, and look at which specific scenarios scored lowest to find your most fixable, situation-specific pattern.
