Tier 1 — Free, structured, with a certificate at the end (best use of downtime)

1. HubSpot Academy — Inbound Sales Certification Free, self-paced, ~4-6 hours, certificate on completion. Best for: reps at inbound/PLG-motion companies; strong on modern buyer-centric selling and CRM fundamentals. Find it at academy.hubspot.com

2. HubSpot Academy — Sales Enablement Certification Free, ~3-4 hours. Best for: understanding how enablement/content/process fit together — useful even for individual reps to understand why their onboarding is structured the way it is. Find it at academy.hubspot.com

3. Salesforce Trailhead — Sales Fundamentals & CRM trails Free, self-paced, modular "trailmixes," badges on completion. Best for: any rep whose company runs on Salesforce — the fastest way to get CRM-fluent before day one. Find it at trailhead.salesforce.com

4. Coursera (audit mode) — "Sales Training for High Performing Teams" (HubSpot) and "Successful Negotiation" (University of Michigan) Free if you audit (skip the paid certificate), several hours of structured video + readings. Best for: reps who want university-level negotiation grounding, not just sales-specific tactics. Find it at coursera.org

5. Vidyard Academy — Video Selling Certification Free, ~2 hours. Best for: any rep doing async/video prospecting — increasingly standard for SDRs and AEs alike. Find it at vidyard.com

Tier 2 — Free communities (best for ongoing peer learning, not day-one structure)

6. RevGenius Free Slack/community membership. Best for: SDRs/AEs wanting real-time peer troubleshooting on live deals; strongest at the early-career end.

7. Pavilion (free tier + "Topline" podcast/content) Free content tier; paid membership unlocks more. Best for: reps who want exposure to go-to-market leadership thinking early, even before they're managing anyone.

8. Modern Sales Pros Free community (approval required). Best for: SaaS-specific sales ops/process questions; more relevant once a rep starts noticing process gaps.

Tier 3 — Free content libraries (best for filling specific skill gaps, not a full curriculum)

9. Gong Labs Free research and data-backed content on what top performers actually do differently on calls. Best for: reps who want to see real (anonymized) patterns behind objection handling and discovery, not generic advice.

10. Winning by Design — free SaaS sales blueprints Free frameworks (Bowtie funnel, sales-as-a-science content). Best for: reps at subscription/SaaS companies who want the "why" behind their sales process, not just the "how."

11. JB Sales (John Barrows) — free YouTube/newsletter content Free short-form video content, some free webinars. Best for: tactical, day-to-day skill sharpening (objection handling, cold calling) in 10-15 minute chunks.

12. SaaStr YouTube channel Free, conference-talk format. Best for: reps who want context on the business/investor side of the company they just joined — useful for credibility in exec conversations later in their career, not day-one skill building.

How to sequence these in a rep's first month

  • Week 1: Trailhead or HubSpot CRM-specific trail (matches your actual tech stack)
  • Week 2: HubSpot Inbound Sales Certification (core selling skills)
  • Week 3: Vidyard video selling cert + Gong Labs content (modern prospecting)
  • Week 4: Join RevGenius or Modern Sales Pros community; keep it running as background learning, not a task

What to skip

  • Any "certification" that requires payment for the credential itself — treat it as a paid course, not a free resource, and evaluate ROI separately
  • Generic "sales skills" YouTube content with no named methodology behind it — hard to build on later
  • LinkedIn Learning courses unless your company already pays for a seat — the free trial auto-bills

How to use it

Work through the Tier 1 certifications in the suggested week-by-week sequence during onboarding downtime, then keep the Tier 2 communities running as background learning well past month one.
