The 10 enablement metrics that actually correlate skill development to revenue outcomes, and the 6 vanity metrics to stop putting in your QBR deck.

What's inside

  • 10 metrics that matter, each with its formula and what revenue outcome it correlates to
  • 6 vanity metrics to retire, with the specific reason each one is misleading
  • A 1-page swap table (vanity metric → its correlated replacement)
  • Benchmark ranges for each of the 10 metrics where a general range is defensible
  • Cadence guidance — which metrics to review weekly vs quarterly
  • A note on the one precondition every metric on this list depends on (accurate skill-level data)

Enablement Metrics That Matter — Cheat Sheet

The 10 metrics that actually correlate to revenue

2Skill-level → win-rate correlationWin rate segmented by competency level (e.g. Discovery: Foundational vs Advanced)Which specific skill gap is actually costing dealsQuarterly
3Post-coaching behavior change rate% of coached reps who demonstrate the coached behavior in their next 3 observed callsWhether coaching is landing at all, vs just happeningMonthly
4Certification-to-attainment liftAvg attainment of certified reps vs uncertified, same tenure bandWhether your certification program is real or ceremonialQuarterly
5Competency coverage rate% of active reps with a current (≤6mo) skill assessment on fileWhether you can even measure the rest of this listMonthly
6Deal-cycle length by discovery quality scoreAvg days-to-close segmented by discovery competency scoreWhere in the funnel a skill gap adds real cycle timeQuarterly
7Manager coaching cadence adherence% of managers completing scheduled 1:1 observation/coaching sessionsLeading indicator for every metric above — if coaching isn't happening, nothing else movesWeekly
8Skill-gap-to-churn correlationAttrition rate segmented by competency level at hire's 6-month markWhether skill gaps predict regrettable attrition before it happensQuarterly
9Net revenue retention by account-growth competency levelNRR segmented by the account owner's Account Growth domain levelWhether skill investment shows up in expansion revenue, not just new-logoQuarterly
10Internal promotion rate from certified pool% of promotions filled by certified/gate-qualified candidates vs external hireWhether your career-pathing and certification systems are actually load-bearingAnnual

The 6 vanity metrics to stop reporting

#Vanity metricWhy it's misleading
1Training completion rateMeasures attendance, not capability change. A 100% completion rate with flat win rates means nothing transferred.
2Content/course library size"We have 400 modules" says nothing about whether the right 15 competencies are covered well.
3LMS login frequencyCorrelates with mandate enforcement, not skill growth.
4NPS on training sessionsReps rate sessions highly when they're entertaining, not when they're the ones that actually moved behavior.
5Number of coaching sessions loggedA manager can log 20 five-minute check-ins with zero observed behavior change; volume isn't quality.
6Certification pass rate at first attemptHigh pass rates usually mean the bar is too low, not that reps are excelling — compare against #4 above instead.

The one precondition

Every metric above depends on having accurate, current, per-rep skill-level data — without it you're back to vanity metrics by default, because completion and login counts are the only thing left to measure. If your competency coverage rate (#5) is below ~70%, fix that first; every other number on this sheet will be noise until it is.

How to use it

Replace each vanity metric currently in your enablement dashboard with its swap-table equivalent, and don't report metrics 1–10 org-wide until your Competency Coverage Rate (#5) is above roughly 70%.
