Discovery Call Objection-Prevention Checklist

A discovery-call checklist organized by which future objection each question prevents, so budget, authority, and status-quo pushback never get the chance to surface at the close.

What's inside

  • Checklist items organized by the future objection each question is designed to prevent
  • Budget/economic-buyer questions that prevent price objections at the close
  • Stakeholder-mapping questions that prevent authority objections
  • Current-state questions that prevent 'happy with vendor' pushback
  • Urgency questions that prevent timing stalls
  • Trust-building questions that prevent skepticism objections
  • Competitive questions that prevent blind competitor comparisons
  • A closing checklist item to lock next steps and prevent procrastination stalls

Every objection you hear at the close was a question you didn't ask at discovery. This checklist is organized by the future objection each question is designed to prevent — work through it on every discovery call and you'll surface the landmines while there's still time to defuse them.

Prevents: Price / Budget Objections

  • Asked: "Is there a budget already allocated for this, or would this need to be created?"
  • Asked: "What's the cost today of not solving this — in time, money, or missed opportunity?"
  • Asked: "Who signs off on spend at this level, and what do they typically need to see?"

Prevents: Authority / Stakeholder Objections

  • Asked: "Besides you, who else would be involved in this decision?"
  • Asked: "Has a purchase like this gone through your organization before — who was involved, and how did it go?"
  • Asked: "If we got to a yes, what would the internal approval steps look like?"

Prevents: "Happy With Current Vendor" / Status Quo Objections

  • Asked: "What are you using today, and on a scale of 1-10, how well is it actually working?"
  • Asked: "What's the one thing you'd change about your current setup if you could?"
  • Asked: "What would have to happen for you to seriously consider a change?"

Prevents: Timing Objections

  • Asked: "Is there a specific event or deadline driving this now, or is it more exploratory?"
  • Asked: "What else is competing for your team's attention and budget this quarter?"
  • Asked: "If we didn't move on this in the next 90 days, what would that cost you?"

Prevents: Trust Objections

  • Asked: "Have you tried something like this before? What happened?"
  • Asked: "What would you need to see from us to feel confident this isn't a repeat of that?"
  • Shared a relevant, specific proof point (not generic) matched to their industry/use case.

Prevents: Competition Objections

  • Asked: "Are you evaluating any other options alongside us?"
  • Asked: "What would make another option the easy choice over us?"
  • Asked: "What matters most in this decision — price, capability, support, or something else?"

Prevents: Procrastination / Stalling at the Close

  • Asked: "Walk me through what happens after this call on your end."
  • Asked: "What's historically caused a decision like this to stall internally?"
  • Confirmed a specific next step and date before ending the call — not "I'll follow up."

How to Use This on a Live Call

Don't read this as a script — treat it as a mental checklist you clear by the end of discovery. If you reach the proposal stage and any section above is still unchecked, expect that objection to surface later, and go back for the missing question before you pitch.

How to use it

Work through the checklist live on every discovery call; any unchecked section by the time you reach a proposal is an objection you should expect later.
