Board-Ready Sales Metrics Dashboard Template

The exact slide layout and metric set — pipeline coverage, NRR, magic number, and more — that investors expect to see in a board deck, with formulas and benchmark ranges for each.

What's inside

  • 7-slide board deck structure with the purpose and audience question each slide answers
  • Slide 1: one-page scorecard with the 8 headline metrics investors scan first
  • Slide 2: pipeline coverage & funnel layout with the coverage-ratio formula and benchmark
  • Slide 3: bookings-vs-plan layout with variance commentary format
  • Slide 4: retention/expansion slide — GRR, NRR, logo churn formulas and cohort view
  • Slide 5: efficiency slide — magic number, CAC payback, burn multiple, Rule of 40 formulas
  • Slide 6: rep productivity & ramp slide layout
  • Slide 7: forecast, risks, and the specific asks-of-the-board format

A board deck exists to answer one question per slide: "Should the board be worried, and if so, about what specifically?" Every slide below is built around that, with the formula behind every metric so nothing gets presented as a black box.

Slide 1 — Headline Scorecard

One table, top of deck, before any narrative. Use a simple vs.-plan and vs.-prior-quarter column so trend is visible at a glance.

MetricThis quartervs. Planvs. Prior Quarter
New bookings (ARR)
Total ARR
Net New Logos
Gross Revenue Retention (GRR)
Net Revenue Retention (NRR)
Pipeline coverage ratio
Magic Number
CAC Payback (months)

Slide 2 — Pipeline Coverage & Funnel

Layout: funnel chart (stages: created → qualified → proposal → verbal → closed-won) with conversion % between each stage, plus the coverage ratio headline.

Pipeline Coverage Ratio = Total Open Pipeline ÷ Remaining Quota (or ARR target)

  • Benchmark: 3-4x coverage for the current quarter is the widely-used healthy range for a ~25-30% win rate; adjust up if win rate is below 20%, down if above 35%

Include: stage-to-stage conversion rate, average sales cycle length, and a one-line callout on where the funnel is leaking worst this quarter.

Slide 3 — Bookings vs. Plan

Layout: bar chart, plan vs. actual, by month within the quarter, plus a cumulative line.

FieldThis quarter
Plan (ARR)
Actual (ARR)
Variance ($ and %)
Variance driver (one line: rep productivity, deal slippage, pricing, market)
Deals slipped into next quarter (count and $)

Rule: never show a bookings miss without the one-line driver — an unexplained miss reads as a controls problem, not a market problem, even when it's the latter.

Slide 4 — Retention & Expansion

Layout: cohort retention curve (by customer start-quarter cohort) plus headline GRR/NRR.

Gross Revenue Retention (GRR) = (Starting ARR − Downgrades − Churn) ÷ Starting ARR (capped at 100%, expansion excluded)

Net Revenue Retention (NRR) = (Starting ARR − Downgrades − Churn + Expansion) ÷ Starting ARR

  • Benchmark: GRR of 90%+ is considered healthy for most B2B SaaS; NRR of 100-120%+ signals a strong expansion motion, above 130% is best-in-class

Include: logo churn rate (# of customers lost ÷ total customers) shown separately from revenue churn — a board will ask if you don't.

Slide 5 — Efficiency Metrics

MetricFormulaBenchmark
Magic Number(Current Qtr ARR − Prior Qtr ARR) × 4 ÷ Prior Qtr S&M spend>0.75 efficient, >1.0 excellent
CAC Payback (months)CAC ÷ (ARPA × Gross Margin %)Under 12-18 months is healthy for most SaaS
LTV:CACCustomer Lifetime Value ÷ CAC3:1 or higher is the common target
Burn MultipleNet Burn ÷ Net New ARRUnder 1.5x is efficient, under 1.0x is excellent
Rule of 40Revenue Growth Rate % + Profit Margin %≥40 is considered healthy

Layout: simple metric table with a one-line trend arrow per metric versus the prior 2 quarters — boards care more about trajectory than a single-quarter snapshot.

Slide 6 — Rep Productivity & Ramp

Layout: two-panel — (1) quota attainment distribution across the team (histogram: % of reps at 0-50%, 50-80%, 80-100%, 100%+ of quota), (2) new-hire ramp cohort chart (see the Ramp-to-Quota Calculator resource for the underlying benchmark curve).

MetricThis quarter
% of reps at or above 100% of quota
Average ramp time to full quota (new hires this year)
Rep attrition rate (regretted vs. non-regretted)
Average tenure of quota-carrying team

Slide 7 — Forecast, Risks & Asks

Layout: three short blocks, not a wall of text.

Forecast (next quarter):

  • Commit: $_____
  • Best case: $_____
  • Confidence level and the one factor most likely to move it

Top 3 risks:

  1. _____ (and the mitigation already underway)
  2. _____
  3. _____

Specific asks of the board:

  • e.g., "Approval for +2 enterprise AE headcount to defend Tier 1 coverage ratio"
  • e.g., "Introduction to [specific type of connection] to support the [specific initiative]"

Rule: every ask should be specific and actionable in the room — "more support" is not an ask a board can act on; "approve $X for Y headcount by Z date" is.

How to use it

Rebuild this exact 7-slide structure each board cycle so investors can track trend quarter over quarter without re-learning your layout, and fill in every formula field yourself rather than pulling a vanity metric your BI tool defaults to — the formulas are the point, not just the numbers.
